Dream:   In this dream I received a call from a very close friend asking me to come over and assist him with some household tasks. When I arrived he was overwhelmed and frustrated with all the "to-do's" and asked me to take care of the "baby" while he attended to other priorities. The baby was about 3 months old and in need of attention...I was happy to help. When the tasks were accomplished, I was anxious to be on my way and began the drive home. Suddenly everything was unfamiliar - I could have just as well been in another country. I approached a busy intersection and was appalled to see two women busily landscaping the middle of the crossway with flowers, bushes and a park bench. I rolled down the window and asked them how they expected me to get home when they were clearly blocking the intersection? They agreed to "temporarily" remove the roadblock and allow me to proceed ahead - which I did. A half block down the street the road ended and crumbled into a fairly steep ravine and fast moving river. The older woman appeared with a hand-size piece of foam rubber and said, "You'll need this to stay afloat." I was irritated that she offered me something that I felt was not a solution. However, it worked and I made it across the river. I found a dirt path to walk (albeit still unfamiliar territory)and was aware that I was being followed by a black bear. He didn't appear aggressive, but I was unnerved that he stayed fairly close behind.

Any ideas?

Interpretation:   Deedee,
Calls from close friends are often calls from your unconscious, those aspects within your pysche whose intent is to provide valuable information about you. This call is from your masculine self, your masculine qualities. The to do's are probably responsibilities in your life {masculine qualties}, either/and those in your waking life, or those of a deeper aspect that address unconscious contents that have yet to be properly acknowledged. The baby may be an undeveloped aspect within you, or developing aspect. If you were a younger woman it could also also be addressing an actual child, if there were such a person in your waking life. Since you are at the mid-life stage I see it as something within that has not yet fully developed. It needs your attention. Because in the dream you are happy to help, this points to a positive aspect that you want to develope.

The 3 months may be important also. Often dreams will point to certain times or experiences in your life. You may want to look back to months ago and see if there is any relevance.

The tasks have been accomplished and things are unfamiliar. This is mid-life. The children are grown, the dog has died, the repsonbilities of raisng and caring for a family and/or career are changing. You are in a new world, new responsibilities, a new life. You are indeed in another country if not another world.

The antithesis to the world of social requirements and responsbilities is that of the true self, what Joseph Campbell called 'following your bliss'. In your dream you have come upon a creative self, the two women {the dualing aspects within yourself} busily landscaping the middle of the crossway {mid-life} with flowers, bushes and a park bence {to rest upon the social being that is no longer responsible for the social requirements}. In the dream it is a temporarily roadblock, you are resisiting the call to the true self. When removed you find an empty road and life crumbles. The fast moving river are the emotions that you may be experiencing in your mid-life drama. The older woman, your wise inner self, offers help {in mythology there are helping hands to guide you throughout your journey} to stay afloat in your time of crsis. Not recognizing your condition {mid-life} you are irritated {a common reaction to the changes that you go through at mid-life-often you are irritable with everything}. But the wise self knows best and when listened offers solutions. You are avbe to overcome the emotional and physical maladies of mid-life.

The dirt path is getting back to the grounding you once had in your other world {of raising a family, career, etc}, but the changes of mid-lfe are unfamiliar. Bears are aggressive creatures and being black {unconscious} may indicate the aggressive nature you need to take ovecome the changes you are going through. The bear is also a symbol for the feminine and this may be pointing to the aggressive physical changes you are also undergoing at your mid-life point.

I see this dream pointing to your mid-life issues. You are undergoing many changes, psychological and physical. Whereas medications are available to help you through these times of great anxieties, it is the will within you to find new avenues of responsbilities to will fill your time that ultimatley restore a true balance and harmony to your life. Since you no longer have the family and/or career to keep you busy {or these apsects are coming to a close in the near future} you will need something new and unfamilair to fill the void. Jung tells us that to find harmony and balance in life, after mid-life, we need to look to our iiner world, that thing in life you have always wanted to do but were unable because of the responbilities placed upon you by society. It is creative and at the same time spiritual {not necessarily religious}. You probably already have something in mind yet you are hesitant to go that path. I think your dream is telling you to aggessively go that path.

Also, you may be interested in my page on mid-life issues. There is a lot of info that may be of help in your transition.

I would greatly be interested to your response to my interpretation. Any information that you can provide may shine new light on the possibilies as to what the dream message is.

Follow-Up Post:   Thank you, Gerard...very wise words indeed. My marriage of 28 years ended "3 months" ago - certainly being thrust again into the single arena has been both unfamiliar and frightening. Yet despite the difficulty in navigating through the unknown, I have been increasingly aware of a guiding presence within my dreams. At least three or four nights a week (for the last year) I have dreamt something very vivid - and generally with the appearance of an older, gray-haired woman who offers assistance. Most often she is silent, but lately there have been verbal communications i.e. advice, direction, or a solution of sorts. Dreaming is not new to me - interpretation is, however. I am quite fascinated with your response.

Thank you again.
